Comunity Music Pack? (CMP)
Custom music woes...
yes, I feel the pain of all of you.
But surely we could hunt about for public domain stuff.... I am sure there is gigabytes of public domain recordings of classical, gregorian, and other ancient or world music forms... and really, we need those more than we need friggin (** insert whoever is hot this nanosecond **) or (** insert most annoying boy band name here **) or even (** insert that old hair metal group that you are ashamed you liked in 1987 even though everyone else did too, apparently **).
Also, music creation software is not pricey (at least some of it isn't). Although it's really designed for dance and techno mostly, which would be great for a modern or sci-fi mod, but um... not for dungeons and dragons, unfortunately.
What I need are some good open-source sea chanteys.. you'd think they existed, now that you think about it eh?
Nobody still tries to hold copyright on "Bang Away Lulu" for example... (what in the heck will the Navy do now that dear old Lulu's gone?)

Everyone has had this idea at some point in time.
Just to discuss selection of the music itself and not bother about legal issues I would simply state that by (mostly) using original music made by the community and uploaded to the Vault, copyright infringements will be minimal.
Agree. Obviously the Baldur's Gate soundtrack and the LOTR soundtrack are way out of line, but there is a decent amount of original music on the vault. (Adam Miller's Demon soundtrack comes to mind, and the composer has agreed to let other builders use those tunes too by the way, although I don't think any builder did use them in the end) And redistributing those in ready-for-use bmu format and easy-to-handle packages within the vault should not cause any problem. For anyone to complain about copyright **** in this context is like me complaining about combo-packers redistributing my original models and artwork.
And if any, quickly corrected (READ: excluded from distribution)
So on the technical side, is there a way to create, or is there already one, installer for the music directory?
And how would content be added to the CMP? I.e. selected for distribution?
Top Rated? Most downloads? New content? Themes? Whats your thoughts?
Themed albums would be nice, like Horror, Taverns, Elven, Mountains, City, Combat, Oriental, whatever... These can be made in download friendly packs of say 50mb (bout 15 tracks) each, so players don't need to download everything, except for the ones specified by the builders. On the builder's end, there only needs to be one single 2da, with properly labeled entries pointing to specific albums, so builders will know exactly which albums are required.
So on the technical side, is there a way to create, or is there already one, installer for the music directory?
This is quite straightforward. You could use the content installer in NWN\utils\nwcontbuild.exe or a stand-alone tool.

Top Rated? Most downloads? New content? Themes? Whats your thoughts?
I think youd have to look outside the vault for the really interesting things. With only 500 vault entries in total, once you rule out half because they are not music and/or copyrighted, thats not a vast amount. However, if you have a quick look through google, you can find a number of "sample tracks" or similar by various artists, as well as "public domain" songs by anti-corporation people.
I wouldnt divide it up into parts, then that is just a hassle for those on broadband to get the whole thing. You might have 2 distros, and All-in-one, and another in 50mb chunks. Youd need a tiny cmp.hak file with the 2da in, the rest can sit straight in the music folder. You would also need a detailed copyright list with exactly where you got each file from, when, and whos credited with it. If you send an template email to author saying what your trying to do, and if you dont recieve a reply saying "no dont do that" within a couple of weeks, you should be OK.
If it was made, Id build with it.

It might become popular assuming there's enough original material out there to compile into a common download. Have members of the NWN community come up with much in the way of original music compositions for use in the game?
And I've been reading that the CEP, CTP, and other coomunity compilations and stuff are at least thinking of setting up a single common website. That might make it easier for anyone who wants to get a CMP going.

hmm
This is tempting... Very tempting...
On one hand I am a very selective person when it comes to music.
On the other hand I have very little reguards as to copy right laws.
Perhaps if I "researched" into the best community music I could liberate some good tracks and send a simple compensation, if anyone wanted to take it to the next step It would be double checking copy rights and formatting the music.
I also think voice sets would be a great idea

A single person don't have to go through all files by themselves.. Thats a little too much..
I have two professional musicians/sound engineers on my team that already works with related tasks for the Endoora PW Project. With them Endoora can manage three persons going through files, thats around 333 each. So if more is interested, it wont take to long to throw away the bad seeds.
I also support the idea of themed packs, but a single piece of music don't need to be exclusive for one theme. A good way to go, but not necessarily the easiest, would be to set up a portal for voting.
At first a rough selection could be done 'in-house' by the project team and then publish thet selection for the community.
The voter could then rate the file, and via drop-down menus chosse their preferred theme for the piece as well.
So as always it comes down to the hard, tedious legwork (earache?), and continous team discussions.
I'm totally up for the idea, anyone wanna buy the domain nwncmp.com/org whatever? It's up for grabs. And if we can achive something, why not try to be a part of the planned joining of community forumboards?
Keep the ideas coming on my questions in previous posts as well..

First off- I think this is a great idea.... in theory.....
In practice it becomes far more complicated. For example, how would you guarantee that each musical piece you select is not already copyrighted? Are you going to watch every movie, play, opera or video game ever made to make sure that the selected cuts aren't illegally brought to the table?
Or will you work on the honor system?
The only reason I bring this up is to shed some light on the point I illustrated before- if you do run into a copyright issue, the consequences could be huge. Many modules use copyrighted musical content already. They are able to get away with it because the use of such content flies under the radar. The issue of copyright infringement simply doesn't exist, because the useage is very quiet and fits into a tiny niche, and above all, can legally be considered private use.
If you create a "cmp", or whatever you want to call it, it definitely will attract attention, and the niche will become more of a name-recognition type thing. The argument that such content is intended for private use becomes much less convincing. If a copyright is busted under those circumstances, even accidentally, then every module maker who ever used such content will now be at risk due to the heightened awareness of the corporate powers-that-be and their lawyers.
You have to remember that except for custom portraits, custom music is the only kind of custom content that can be used for things other than modding. Remember also, that BioWare changed many of their own portraits because of copyright issues. Several Baldur's Gate portrait sites had to shut down completely because a minority of their content was copyrighted and somebody called foul and brought in a lawyer. Thank God nobody has developed a NwN "Custom Portrait Pack" with the same fanfare as CTP, CEP and CRAP.
I feel that this is the same sort of potential risk we run by creating a "Custom Music Pack." I certainly don't want record companies and their lawyers sniffing around other, niche-oriented private use areas as well, such as maybe...... Vault-loaded hak paks for individual modules? What if Neverwinter Vault were served a cease-and-desist order on all copyrighted musical content? Do you not see that all custom music would get the axe? I mean if you were Maximus, and such extreme measures were taken by an outside source, why would you even risk letting any custom music in at all? Do you realize how many modules, including Hall of Fame works which I will not name, would be thrown out? I know this nightmare scenario sounds far-fetched, but do you really doubt that the possibility exists for such an overkill, heavily-corporate, "let's sue the end-users" reaction?
I sure don't. Never underestimate the ability of big-money corporate lawyers to take the fear of piracy to such ridiculous extremes....
