Well, many downloads later - I've downloaded everything back to 6/14/2004 that wasn't obviously ripped from CDs or other games (with a couple of exceptions). Once I filter out a set of tracks that I couldn't find any origination credits for (part of a compilation), I'm still left with 78 tracks that I re-listened to today, adding some comments and track length. There are a few good ones, a bunch of fair ones, and a few stinkers.

A fair number would work well as ambient background music. A pitifully small number could be battle music (after looping the tracks to get the lengths up to BioWare battle music length). A few are too short for ambient music, but could serve for a cutscene's backdrop.

A couple sets of tracks are themed (the same musical motif appears in more than one of an author's works), which is nice for creating a theme for a region.

There are very few authors who have submitted more than a couple tracks (looking at my review notes, it looks like there are *5* who have submitted six or more original usable tracks), for what that's worth.

Were we still going to get a separate forum to discuss the CMP, or are we sticking to this thread for the time being?

Interesting indeed.
As for forums I've not made a formal inquiry to Christopher yet as I haven't had the time. (babies and stuff ;))

The clear pros of having a forum here on the CTP boards is that many of the active and dedicated peeps still hangs around here.

Thats also the obvious con of setting up a forum at, lets say my projects homepages, new registration and another board.
But Im more than willing to set it up if you all is interested, but my first choice is these boards if it ever comes down to a vote :D

If Christopher & the CTP don't mind us chattering over here about music, I'd say we should stay here. I already have enough accounts to juggle, and I'm going to start forgetting user names or passwords someday.

So, how do you keep track of your dl's?
Do rate them or just sorting them right now?

No problems with that at all.

And, we do intend to get you guys setup with your own 'mini-forums' to help you work on things. However, CTP website is also trying to get things ready for moving to a new host.

Give us a chance to get that move finalized, and then we can split off a forum for you guys ok?

We should stay...

Post by raven280 »

Hey Guys,
I also agree with Grov that we should stay here within the CTP, because this is where there is still an active/creative NWN collection of community members. Good work CWebb...thanks for taking a good look at what has already been created and placed on the vault. I did notice a new set of sounds that was posted last week...and the author claimed that they were created to be used outside of 2da's...some kind of stand alone WAV HAK. I havnt really looked into how it works, or what is involved with something like that... but it may be a really good way for us to also do our project. If we were to create a music/sound project that did not have to deal with current Bioware sounds and music through 2da's, it would probably be alot less work for us... and it may also be more compliant with NWN2. I dont know that NWN2 will have a 2da system like NWN1. Here is the link to what was posted:

Thanks for the offer Bannor, and no hurry to get us our own place within CTP. I think this forum is just fine for what we are doing now.

I set up a directory per contributor (so, "Darklord Snafe" has a directory, et cetera) with all the mp3 in that directory. I created a text file where I listed each track per contributor and listed short notes about what I liked/disliked, tempo, feel/mood. I've listened to each track at least 2-3 times, sometimes just as background when I'm working (I usually listen to music at work), sometimes taking a few minutes to listen to them while taking a break (which is when I made comments about the tracks).

I'll have to remember to download this Monday from work, but what I *think* is going on is he's using placeables and wav files. I'm going to venture that we don't want to do ambient music as wav files - file size will be big, and it's something that will fade as the PC moves away from the point source (depending on which type of ambient sound it is), and we'll have to convert the mp3 to wav format. For it to show up nicely in the toolset, we'll need to edit ambientmusic.2da for NWN1. I don't know anything about NWN2, so I don't know what will or won't work there. Since we're near the end of the NWN1 life cycle (one more patch that we know of), I don't think maintaining a 2da is that big of a deal for NWN1.

My 2GP (or 3 or 4)...

Probably right...

Hey CWebb,
You are probably right about the 2da's, but I was hopeful that maybe someone had found a way around it. By the way, about a year ago before I knew or had any idea of doing a community sound/music project, I downloaded every piece of sound or music that was on the vault and rated above a 7.0 (going back to 2002). It is a nice sized file that I really havnt done much with other than listen to, but we may be able to find some nice pieces in there to add to the new stuff you have collected. The system you have set up sounds like it will work well...maybe we should figure out a way that we can each review and comment on each file, then press on from there as far as what we collectively feel is the best of the community. As far as NWN2, we will just have to wait and see. Another thing we can look at is the pieces that have been added to the cancelled premium modules that are being released. I doubt Bioware or anyone else will ever officially patch them into NWN1, so maybe we can add them to our project. I will look at the music folder I have, and see if its small enough that I can email out. Talk to you later.

Raven I have a small suggestion to get a few wheels turning, make an Avatar on the Vault called CMP Team or somthing, then post the music that you found, break up the over all file into smaller groups

I wouldn’t call it a beta or even a trial version but Id like to listen to some the music you found without struggling to find it myself. Maybe you will even get some strong feedback from the community
